Swine Flu Update

As the World Health Organization raises the Pandemic Alert Level for swine flu, Tri-State Nursing is joining the Federal and State agencies in increasing awareness and prevention of the Swine Flu.

Tri-State Nursing is continuing to monitor the situation and release updates as they are available.

Please follow these swine flu prevention tips to help keep yourself, your family and your co-workers healthy:

bullet Wash your hands often with soap and water.  This removes germs from your skin and helps prevent diseases from spreading.
bullet Use waterless alcohol-based hand gels (containing at least 60% alcohol) when soap is not available and hands are not visibly dirty.
bullet Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and put your used tissue in a wastebasket.
bullet If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
bullet Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth because germs can spread in that manner
bullet Wash your hands after coughing or sneezing, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand gel.
bullet Stay home from work, school and events  when sick
bullet Avoid close contact with people who are sick
bullet Follow all local health recommendations.
bullet Practice other good health habits
bullet Get plenty of sleep
bullet Be physically active
bullet Manage stress
bullet Eat nutritious foods
bullet Drink plenty of liquids

Tri-State Nursing encourages our clients to schedule a date for a seasonal flu vaccination clinic now, as it remains the number one defense in preventing the flu.

Swine flu is a respiratory infection caused by influenza type A viruses that regularly cause outbreaks of influenza in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can occur. Human cases typically involve people who have had direct contact with pigs, but person-to-person transmission appears to have occurred among the recent cases. Public Health officials have confirmed that the newly identified swine influenza virus has caused illness in California, Texas, New York, Ohio and Mexico.  To date, 40 confirmed cases have been reported in the United States and most of the infections have been mild.  The cases in Mexico have been more severe.

The virus contains a unique combination of gene segments that have not been reported previously among swine or human influenza viruses in the U.S. or elsewhere.  Federal, state, local and international health officials are closely monitoring the situation.  This investigation is still in the early stages and further investigation updates are available at: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/investigation.htm
